• What’s the typical life span of a hot tub or spa?

What’s the typical life span of a hot tub or spa?

As you start thinking about investing into a hot tub, one of the big questions that comes up is “how long will it really last?” There’s no one answer here, and the outcome is really dependent on first, the hot tub you buy, and second, the way you take care of it.

Based on the results of independent studies carried out to determine energy usage, environmental impact, and the life of hot tubs and spas, the average life expectancy of a hot tub was found to be only 5 – 8 years in most cases. When the results only included a list of more reputable manufacturers, the rate went up to 10 to 15 years.

How Long Can Your Hot Tub Last?

The Importance of Quality in Construction

So why so much disparity? It comes down to the quality in the construction of the hot tub you buy. If you buy an inexpensive, budget hot tub from a retailer without a strong brand reputation, you can most likely expect cheap construction and poor insulation. By cutting corners in production costs, manufacturers are able to offer these models at far lower price points. However, don’t be fooled by a low upfront cost. Not only will they offer you a much shorter lifespan, they will also be way more costly to operate and maintain due to the low-quality of the parts.

    Think Long-Term When Investing

Just think about it this way: if a hot tub potentially costs $5,000 and only lasts five years, that would be like spending $1,000 on that hot tub per year. If you purchase a hot tub that costs $7,500 and lasts twenty years, your usage cost would really be only $375. Even without factoring in the added operational costs of a cheaper construction, you’re still getting far less bang for your buck when you choose a budget-model and bargain retailer.

This return on investment, and more importantly, years of added enjoyment for you and your family, is one of the many reasons why we believe that purchasing high-quality hot tubs, like a Beachcomber Hot Tub, will help you save money in the long run and give you a product that lasts.

Many of our owners have had their Beachcombers for over 25 years, and continue enjoying regular usage from their hot tubs!

Our products are 100% hand-crafted, from start to finish, in our Surrey, BC factory. Just take a look at what goes into the construction of every tub – no matter the price point or model – that Beachcomber produces.

  • How to Create the Perfect Patio

How to Create the Perfect Patio

With the summer months approaching, you want to have a fabulous outdoor space to entertain friends and family, have backyard parties or even just dine al fresco outdoors when the weather’s warm. But here’s the problem: you don’t know how to begin designing your perfect backyard patio.

Well, with some expert tips and a little guidance, you’ll be able to create the best patio to full embrace and enjoy the long summer nights!

Tips For Creating a Dream Backyard Patio (with a Hot Tub)

    • No matter the flooring material you choose (granite, hardwood, stone or concrete), make sure you keep the flooring consistent to all the different spaces on the patio to keep the rooms from feeling too frenetic and unbalanced
    • Combining built-in & freestanding furniture can help differentiate and delineate different patio spaces (ie. having freestanding couches around a built-in fire pit)
    • Directing the view on a patio is important. By situating a bench or a long outdoor sectional on one end of the patio, you encourage visitors to look out at the rest of the yard
    • Instead of using plain concrete to build any built-in furniture, considering adding some stones or tile mosaic for some whimsical design elements.

Does your vision of a perfect patio include a gathering spot or a focal point? A fireplace, or a hot tub can be a great gathering spot. To make a feature stand out though, consider the following ideas:

    • Do you want the feature to blend in or stand-out?
    • How will it impact the amount of space for other design elements? Ensure that you aren’t trying to fit too much into too small of a space
    • Think about the types of colours and patterns you want to use to draw attention to the space if your vision is to make it a focal point

Even when it comes to the rest of the patio, think about having a colour scheme. If your colour scheme is more on the neutral side, try mixing it up with subtle patterns with different brick sizes to spice things up. If your colour scheme is more vibrant and warm, use more neutral stone for the patio floor, built-in seating and focal points.

If you have a larger grass backyard behind the patio, consider planting more lush greenery like flowers, green ferns and possibly even some herbs and vegetables to seamlessly transition the patio into the grass yard. Also consider planting some narrow upright trees to separate each area (dining, fireplace etc.) from each other as well as to provide shade.

One last tip to help you start to build your perfect backyard patio: if your patio extends to another yard, make sure you plant a row of short hedges to ensure privacy and property division.

Now you have an expert checklist in hand to help you create your patio paradise!

  • 5 Hot Tub Myths Debunked

    5 Hot Tub Myths Debunked

A lot has been said about hot tubs over the years, both good and bad. Whether you own a hot tub currently or are thinking of investing in a backyard spa for your home, Beachcomber Hot Tubs has a rundown of some of the most frequently asked hot tub misconceptions.

The Real Facts About Hot Tubs

Myth #1 – Insulation is not necessary

The biggest misconception in hot tub construction is in the required amount of insulation under the hot tub shell and / or in the hollow air cavity. Most manufacturers skip this step to preserve cost with little to no insulation under the shell in their hollow air cavity. Independent testing laboratory tests concluded that “[Insulation] is the single most important factor affecting hot tub and spa energy efficiency.” All Beachcomber models have blown-in spray foam that expands and fills air cavities with energy saving insulation. Food for thought: Would you purchase a house without insulation?

Myth #2 – Having more jets improves the performance of a hot tub

As you shop around for your new hot tub, you may hear may a difference of opinions; some companies pride themselves on having more jet ports, but this may also increase the price of your hot tub significantly as your tub will require more motors and horsepower to operate the jets. Secondly, drilling too many jet holes in a seat can deteriorate the structure of the hot tub shell.

At Beachcomber we believe in having jetting strategically placed to target specific muscle groups with each FlexJet allowing up to 7 jets for maximum impact. Beachcomber’s FlexJets give you outstanding performance without compromising structural due to our reverse engineering philosophy. This engineering allows us to give our customers a Lifetime Guarantee that the structural laminated fiberglass composition of the hot tub will never leak.

Myth #3 – All hot tubs are created equal

Don’t be fooled by the initial costs of a poorly constructed hot tub, as you may be paying more over time with service and repairs, versus a high quality Beachcomber product. It’s a fact that most hot tubs have an average life span of 5 years, while Beachcomber hot tubs have a reputation for lasting over 25+ years! The environmental impact of discarding an old hot tub is significant, not to mention the cost of disposal, which is typically around $500. So rule of thumb… The longer it lasts, the less it costs you!

Myth #4 – Pillows attached to your tub are the best

One of the biggest problems with synthetic pillows that are adhered to the lip of the hot tub shell is that they stain, absorb bacteria, become unsanitary and will have to be thrown away over time. Beachcomber has developed comfortable contoured head rests that are artfully placed and ergonomically sculpted directly into the hot tub to prevent warping, fading and are easy to clean!

Myth #5 – Higher horsepower is better

The more motors and pumps you have in a hot tub/spa just adds more cost in service and energy bills. We use reverse engineering to direct available horsepower effectively so that each jetting location delivers just the right power for the best jetting massage. When you lower horsepower or remove motors you use less energy and thus pay less to service and operate your hot tub.

  • How Hydrotherapy Relieves Stress

    How Hydrotherapy Relieves Stress

Stress is a natural reaction inside your body to different environmental and psychological stimuli.  A small amount of stress can help you maintain a healthy nervous system. But if you’re experiencing too much stress, it can cause many debilitating symptoms and illnesses including but not limited to: headaches, tight or sore muscles, high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, infertility and fatigue. Here’s the good news: you can manage and reduce stress with 20-30 minutes of massage and hydrotherapy in a hot tub to help you relax.

Science Proves Hot Tubs Reduce Stress

Scientifically speaking, it is believed that immersing yourself in warm water encourages the release of a hormone called dopamine. Dopamine is released by the parasympathetic nervous system in our bodies to combat the effects of harmful stress. By soaking in a hot tub with massaging jets, it helps to relieve muscle tension, reducing the chances of you experiencing back pain and muscle aches. It also relieves cardiovascular stress on your heart, improving blood flow and circulation throughout your body, calming you down.

Warm water hydrotherapy has 3 common components: heat, buoyancy, and massage.  Heat relaxes the muscles throughout the body.  Buoyancy reduces the body’s weight in water by 90 percent, helping with exercise and movement.  The massage component helps ease the tension spots, allowing the body to release the natural pain killing endorphins, also known as the “happy hormone.”

Five minutes after you immerse yourself in the hot tub, your heart rate and blood pressure slows down.  After ten minutes, your circulation improves, allowing hands and feet to feel warmer. Within 15 minutes, muscles start to relax, which means you can stretch your muscles with less pain as lactic acid and other toxins are released from the body’s system.  After 20 minutes of hydrotherapy, aches and pains, caused by stress become less intense.

With repeated hydrotherapy sessions in the hot tub, you will begin to notice changes.  After three hydrotherapy treatments, your immune system gets stronger.  You’ll have more energy and you won’t feel sick or tired as often.  After five sessions, any tension, physical, and emotional pain decreases significantly.  After ten sessions, pain relief is noticeable while gaining a better sense of well-being.

  • The Top 3 Factors That Can Positively Impact Hot Tub Energy Efficiency

The Top 3 Factors That Can Positively Impact Hot Tub Energy Efficiency

The energy efficiency of a hot tub is based on the quality of the construction, which is why it is so important to do your research and read reviews from current owners as your compare manufacturers. Investing into energy saving construction methods has been a benchmark of Beachcomber Hot Tubs, and one we continue to strive towards improving. Find out a few of the ways we exceed the industry below.

    Beachcomber Hot Tubs’ Energy Efficiency

    1. Beachcomber’s Heatshield helps to prevent heat loss and maintain water temperature

The tight lip seal on Beachcomber’s patented Heatshield prevents moisture from entering the hot tub, resulting heat loss and fluctuations in water temperature. This helps the hot tub become more energy efficient and saves you money in the long run on heating and electrical bills.

    2. Full foam insulation will prevent heat loss for the entire tub

Properly installed foam insulation is the second important factor that affects energy efficiency. Our 100% cavity filled insulation system completely fills every nook and cranny, sealing every space in the empty hot tub cavity. This method prevents the transfer of heat in or out of the hot tub.

    3. Beachcomber’s Hush Pump circulation system.

Properly designed circulation and filtration pumps along with a digital operation system are critical parts of an energy efficient operation. Low voltage products such as Beachcomber’s Hush Pump keep water heated as it moves and it does it at a very low cost.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

  • A Dip in a Hot Tub Could Help Type 2 Diabetes Patients

A Dip in a Hot Tub Could Help Type 2 Diabetes Patients

Time in a hot tub can do more than just relieve aches and pains. There has been recent developments that indicate hydrotherapy can actually help patients with type 2 diabetes.

    How Common Is Diabetes?

According to the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP), there are currently 25.8 million Americans affected by diabetes. Type 2 diabetes, while not curable, can be managed through prescription pills to lower blood glucose levels, diet, exercise and weight loss.

How Does a Hot Tub Help Treat Type 2 Diabetes?

Hydrotherapy in warm water can help to increase blood flow to the extremities, by expanding the blood vessels and helping to decrease numbness and tingling associated with diabetes in patients’ hands and feet. Increased circulation escalates heart rate mimicking the state of your heart during exercise. A 45 minute hydrotherapy session is equivalent to running 5 km and can benefit type 2 diabetes patients who are unable to exercise due to physical limitations. The low impact movement in the water helps to increase blood flow without added strain to the joints.

A study conducted by The New England Journal of Medicine examined eight patients who sat in a hot tub for 30 minutes over three weeks; researchers reported weight loss, plasma glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin in the patients.

The only precaution diabetes patients should take when undergoing hydrotherapy for their condition is making sure the water is sanitized and that the water isn’t too hot. Unclean water can result in infections, and hot water can cause burns that diabetes patients can’t feel until it’s too late.
