  • How To Drain & Re-Fill Your Hot Tub

How To Drain & Re-Fill Your Hot Tub

The best time to replace your hot tub water is before the busy season hits. Doing this now will help you get through the next few months without having to drain & fill your hot tub when you want to use it. It’s also a great opportunity to inspect your hot tub and its components for any signs of damage and wear. Making any necessary repairs and doing some preventative maintenance will save you from having to do an emergency repair later!

Here’s a step by step approach for getting your hot tub ready for the busy season.

    THE LET GO – Easy as 1, 2, 3

    STEP A: Remove & Soak

To remove the MICROFILTER™, twist the trim ring counter clockwise to unlock it and remove along with the floating weir assembly. Lift out the basket, and pull out the MICROFILTER™. Remove debris from the basket and rinse. Soak the MICROFILTER™ in Beachcomber’s FILTER SOAK™ cleaner and when finished, rinse thoroughly with a spray nozzle to remove residue.

FILTER SOAK is an environmentally friendly Ecologo® certified, one-shot, fast acting, alkaline detergent cleaner, which removes organic contaminants and improves the performance of your MICROFILTER™. For best results use in conjunction with a BEACHCOMBER™ Cleaning Canister.

    STEP B: Cleanse & Neutralize

Before draining your hot tub, simply add Beachcomber’s PIPE CLEANSE™ to your hot tub water and let the product circulate for at least 12 hours. This product flushes out an amazing amount of biofilm and bather waste from pipes, leaving a cleaner hot tub for a better experience. Test water for any sanitizer level and if present add NEUTRALIZER as directed to allow for environmentally safe dumping of water.

The average BEACHCOMBER HOT TUB can have up to 250’ of plumbing lines. Keep them clean by using PIPE CLEANSE before you drain your hot tub.

PIPE CLEANSE is a very effective pipe cleaner that is formulated to loosen and dislodge biofilm deposits deep in the internal water lines of your hot tub just before draining. For best results, follow directions on the label.

NEUTRALIZER completely neutralizes active chlorine or bromine in hot tub water, making it safe and environmentally friendly to drain. It is concentrated and will instantly neutralize, or reduce your sanitizer level. Always, follow the directions on the label.

    STEP C: Drain & Clean

Turn power off at the breaker or power disconnect switch. Locate the black DRAIN & FILL valve, found inside behind the door on a portable LEEP™ model or under the step on the Hybrid3™ Edition. Remove the safety cap from the fitting threaded into the valve.

Attach the female end of your garden hose and place the other end at a level lower than the DRAIN & FILL valve to ensure complete draining. To open, turn the outer part of the DRAIN & FILL valve counterclockwise to open and start the draining. Draining time will vary from model to model. Once the hot tub is drained and empty, disconnect the garden hose and close the valve.

While the water is draining is the perfect opportunity to protect your Beachcomber HEATSHIELD™ with COVER CARE. Prepare exterior cover surface by cleaning dirt and grime off with a mixture of warm water and a very mild detergent, using a soft cloth. Thoroughly rinse and allow to dry. Spray COVER CARE generously over entire exterior cover surface until wet. Wait 30 seconds, then wipe dry and buff with a clean absorbent cloth, removing any excess. Reapply COVER CARE at least once a month to ensure optimal protection.

When water is drained down to the footwell is the ideal time to wipe down the acrylic shell with TUB CLEAN and HOT TUB CHAMOIS™. Rinse well with fresh water making sure the DRAIN & FILL valve of the hot tub is still open so that residue drains out. This helps to rid the hot tub of any contaminants that have ended up in the low lying plumbing lines.

COVER CARE is a concentrated, EcoLogo® certified, liquid revitalizer and UV protectant that is ideal for all types of hot tub covers, as well as vinyl products around the home, including patio furniture and vinyl on vehicles.

TUB CLEAN is a fast acting, EcoLogo® certified, non-abrasive biodegradable surface cleaner for the removal of scum lines and grease build-up on hot tub surfaces as well as many other sensitive home and auto applications.

HOT TUB CHAMOIS™ is the fastest, safest way to a streak free clean hot tub. This super absorbent, non-abrasive, ultra soft cleaning tool will make your hot tub shine like new.

    THE GET GO – Easy as 1, 2, 3

    STEP 1: Fill & Eliminate

Close the DRAIN & FILL valve. Using the FRESH FILL™ pre-filter attached to your garden hose start filling up the hot tub. Once hot tub water is up past the skimmer, you are now safe to turn on the power.

After the hot tub is circulating with all bubbles out of the lines, add ELIMINATE™ to protect your hot tub from corrosion.

FRESH FILL™ hot tub pre-filter easily connects to your garden hose and works with all hot tubs. It utilises food grade activated carbon and proprietary filtration media for the removal of metals, volatile organic compounds and suspended solids before they reach your hot tub.

ELIMINATE™ is a liquid concentrate formulated to prevent and inhibit corrosion on hot tub surfaces, fixtures, and equipment. Add an entire 500 mL bottle at every hot tub start-up.

    STEP 2: Accessorize & Heat

This is the perfect time to replace your hot tub accessories such as FILTER SAVERS and HYDRO MOP and turn up the heat so you and your family can be soaking away blissfully in a few short hours.

HYDROMOP™ absorbs unwanted oils and residue from your hot tub water to ensure the optimal water clarity and keep water lines clean.

FILTER SAVERS™ are made from a fine nylon material which traps leaves and debris which reduces maintenance and extends the life of your MICROFILTER™.

    STEP 3: Test & Balance

Nothing is more important than testing your hot tub water and ensuring everything is perfectly balanced for bather comfort and water care product efficiency.

TEST STRIPS  are the fastest and easiest way to test your hot tub. You should test at least 2 times per week and after each use.

RESIST™ helps water to resist changes in pH, and increases the total alkalinity of hot tub water to prevent pH fluctuations. Maintain a proper Total Alkalinity (TA) level of 100 – 120 ppm

PROTECT™ helps protect hot tub equipment and parts from etching by increasing the calcium level of hot tub water. Maintain a proper calcium hardness (CH) level of 150 – 200 ppm

pH PLUS effective for minor pH increases of hot tub water to prevent corrosion and eye/skin irritation and increase sanitizer efficiency. Before adjusting pH, ensure your Total Alkalinity is balanced. Maintain a proper (pH) level of 7.2 – 7.8

pH MINUS effective for minor pH decreases of hot tub water to prevent scaling, cloudy water and eye/skin irritation and increases sanitizer efficiency. Before adjusting pH, ensure your Total Alkalinity is balanced. Maintain a proper (pH) level of 7.2 – 7.8

  • 5 of the World’s Greatest Healing Waters

5 of the World’s Greatest Healing Waters

Water really is everything. As we all know, without water we simply wouldn’t survive. Not only that, but staying properly hydrated each and every day is essential for increasing our energy, adding a glow to the skin, and even revving up the metabolism.

Besides drinking adequate amounts, soaking our bodies in water can be hugely beneficial to our health – even more so than exercise.

Not all water is created equal, however, and there’s a few spots around the world where people have flocked for centuries to experience the natural, healing effects. Get inspired by our list of some of the most famous healing waters across the globe and discover your very own fountain of youth, (it might be closer than you think!)

Healing Waters Around the World (and at Home in Your Hot Tub)

    Bath UK

    Bath, United Kingdom

The only spot in Britain where you can soak in natural mineral waters, the town was first frequented by the Romans and Celts over 2,000 years ago. Ancient sites meet modern amenities, with historic spa buildings blending in with the contemporary design of the modern city. It’s a true oasis just outside of the London sprawl.

    The Dead Sea

The Dead Sea, Israel & Jordan

This famed body of water is 33% salt and has 8X the amount of magnesium, calcium, and potassium compared to regular sea water. At 400M below sea level, the Dead Sea is famous for being the lowest point on Earth. It is also famous for its amazing healing waters – so chock full of minerals that nothing can live in it.

    Budapest Spa

    Budapest, Hungary

Soaking in the baths is a way of life in Budapest, sometimes referred as the “City of Spas”, thanks to the healing waters found throughout, including the Szechenyi, the largest outdoor thermal bath in all of Europe. The massive pools rich in fluoride and metabolic acid are all over and it’s said that the city’s well water can treat ulcer and gallbladder issues and calcium deficiency.

    Natural Spa

    Arima Onsen, Japan

Located just north of Kobe, this hot spring has been attracting wellness-seekers since 631 and is the oldest spa destination in Japan. Scientists have studied the health benefits of nine substances found in the springs, including sulfur, carbon dioxide, hydrogen carbonate, chloride, sulfate and iron. A trip to the Onsen is a part of Japanese culture, and locals head to the natural hot springs water for relaxing and relief from muscle pain, hypertension and other ailments.

Beachcomber hot tubs, hot tubs, spas, chrometherapy

    Your Backyard, Anywhere, Anytime.

Can’t decide on where to head next and want to experience the best in hydrotherapy without ever having to leave home? The heat, buoyancy, and massage of a Beachcomber Hot Tub creates tremendous benefits for your health, including promoting the flow of endorphins, helping you fall asleep faster, improving your circulation, decreasing joint and muscle pain, decreasing stress, and amplifying natural healing processes within your body. Unlike a vacation the only lasts for a short time, creating a backyard oasis featuring a hot tub can create enjoyment for the whole family for years and years.

  • What’s the typical life span of a hot tub or spa?

What’s the typical life span of a hot tub or spa?

As you start thinking about investing into a hot tub, one of the big questions that comes up is “how long will it really last?” There’s no one answer here, and the outcome is really dependent on first, the hot tub you buy, and second, the way you take care of it.

Based on the results of independent studies carried out to determine energy usage, environmental impact, and the life of hot tubs and spas, the average life expectancy of a hot tub was found to be only 5 – 8 years in most cases. When the results only included a list of more reputable manufacturers, the rate went up to 10 to 15 years.

How Long Can Your Hot Tub Last?

The Importance of Quality in Construction

So why so much disparity? It comes down to the quality in the construction of the hot tub you buy. If you buy an inexpensive, budget hot tub from a retailer without a strong brand reputation, you can most likely expect cheap construction and poor insulation. By cutting corners in production costs, manufacturers are able to offer these models at far lower price points. However, don’t be fooled by a low upfront cost. Not only will they offer you a much shorter lifespan, they will also be way more costly to operate and maintain due to the low-quality of the parts.

    Think Long-Term When Investing

Just think about it this way: if a hot tub potentially costs $5,000 and only lasts five years, that would be like spending $1,000 on that hot tub per year. If you purchase a hot tub that costs $7,500 and lasts twenty years, your usage cost would really be only $375. Even without factoring in the added operational costs of a cheaper construction, you’re still getting far less bang for your buck when you choose a budget-model and bargain retailer.

This return on investment, and more importantly, years of added enjoyment for you and your family, is one of the many reasons why we believe that purchasing high-quality hot tubs, like a Beachcomber Hot Tub, will help you save money in the long run and give you a product that lasts.

Many of our owners have had their Beachcombers for over 25 years, and continue enjoying regular usage from their hot tubs!

Our products are 100% hand-crafted, from start to finish, in our Surrey, BC factory. Just take a look at what goes into the construction of every tub – no matter the price point or model – that Beachcomber produces.

  • Does Your Hot Tub Need A Pergola?

Does Your Hot Tub Need A Pergola?

When you invest in a hot tub, you want to ensure you have the perfect setting in your backyard to enjoy it. To really make your hot tub the star of your home, adding a pergola might be an investment you should consider making.

Consider pairing a pergola with your hot tub.

To start, these architectural designs can make an impressive statement. A pergola creates a visual focal point and can help you anchor the space. It also allows you to blend in natural elements by adding vines and plants throughout. You can also add water resistant fabric or a thin clear plastic roof for further protection against the elements. This way you are able to ensure you will be getting maximum year-round usage of your hot tub, in any weather conditions.

Other advantages of this installation over open patios is that added privacy from the neighbours. There’s nothing worse than jumping into your hot tub to relax or enjoy quality time with your loved ones, only to be staring right at the people next door. Depending on the style of pergola you choose, and the plants you add along the sides, you can create an oasis that is protected from unwanted onlookers.

If you are planning on hosting parties in the backyard, this can also add extra space for seating and lounging outside of the hot tub, as well as additional storage for supplies and towels.

When pairing a pergola with your hot tub and your home, try to find one that aesthetically compliments the design, to achieve a unified look. Check out more easy ways on how to landscape around a hot tub and be sure to ask your local dealers on how to find a design that best compliments the functionality and visual style of your space.

  • How to Create the Perfect Patio

How to Create the Perfect Patio

With the summer months approaching, you want to have a fabulous outdoor space to entertain friends and family, have backyard parties or even just dine al fresco outdoors when the weather’s warm. But here’s the problem: you don’t know how to begin designing your perfect backyard patio.

Well, with some expert tips and a little guidance, you’ll be able to create the best patio to full embrace and enjoy the long summer nights!

Tips For Creating a Dream Backyard Patio (with a Hot Tub)

    • No matter the flooring material you choose (granite, hardwood, stone or concrete), make sure you keep the flooring consistent to all the different spaces on the patio to keep the rooms from feeling too frenetic and unbalanced
    • Combining built-in & freestanding furniture can help differentiate and delineate different patio spaces (ie. having freestanding couches around a built-in fire pit)
    • Directing the view on a patio is important. By situating a bench or a long outdoor sectional on one end of the patio, you encourage visitors to look out at the rest of the yard
    • Instead of using plain concrete to build any built-in furniture, considering adding some stones or tile mosaic for some whimsical design elements.

Does your vision of a perfect patio include a gathering spot or a focal point? A fireplace, or a hot tub can be a great gathering spot. To make a feature stand out though, consider the following ideas:

    • Do you want the feature to blend in or stand-out?
    • How will it impact the amount of space for other design elements? Ensure that you aren’t trying to fit too much into too small of a space
    • Think about the types of colours and patterns you want to use to draw attention to the space if your vision is to make it a focal point

Even when it comes to the rest of the patio, think about having a colour scheme. If your colour scheme is more on the neutral side, try mixing it up with subtle patterns with different brick sizes to spice things up. If your colour scheme is more vibrant and warm, use more neutral stone for the patio floor, built-in seating and focal points.

If you have a larger grass backyard behind the patio, consider planting more lush greenery like flowers, green ferns and possibly even some herbs and vegetables to seamlessly transition the patio into the grass yard. Also consider planting some narrow upright trees to separate each area (dining, fireplace etc.) from each other as well as to provide shade.

One last tip to help you start to build your perfect backyard patio: if your patio extends to another yard, make sure you plant a row of short hedges to ensure privacy and property division.

Now you have an expert checklist in hand to help you create your patio paradise!

Feel free to drop us a line, or drop into one of our authorized dealers if you want to know more about what you need to consider when you’re thinking about adding a hot tub to your backyard or patio and any of the specifics and features inside Beachcomber Hot Tubs.

  • Caring for your Beachcomber Hot Tub

Caring for your Beachcomber Hot Tub

Since 1978, Beachcomber has been dedicated to combining innovative technology with top quality customer service. Whether you’re a first-time Beachcomber owner or a long-time Beachcomber lover, we want your experience with us to be relaxing and enjoyable. That’s why we have put together some popular questions on maintaining your hot tub.

Q:           Where do I drain my hot tub water?

A:              Your hot tub water can be drained directly into your backyard, however you need to neutralize the active sanitizer in the water prior to draining. Beachcomber’s Water Care Product “NeutrAll” is what we suggest you use to get the water ready for draining. Simply follow the directions on the label of the bottle and add directly to the water. Let the product circulate for an hour to ensure all active sanitizer is neutralized, then drain away!

    Filter Cleaning

Q:            How often should I clean/change my Microfilter?

A:             Your Microfilter should be rinsed at least once a week, and depending on how often you use your hot tub and how many people are using it, you may want to rinse it more often than that.

Your Microfilter will last from two to four years. We recommend having a spare on hand, just so that when one is in use, the other can be available as a replacement.

Q:            How do I clean the internal plumbing?

A:             Regular shocking and simple maintenance of your hot tub to keep water clean will help to keep internal plumbing clean. However, if the hot tub is under heavy use, super chlorination is a great way to get rid of biofilm in the pipes.

Beachcomber’s product called Deep Clean 5 is an effective internal pipe cleaner. We recommend draining your tub and cleaning its plumbing about every three months under normal use.

    Winter Preparation

Q:            How do I prepare my hot tub for the cold weather?

A:             There is no need to prepare your hot tub for winter. Our hot tubs are designed to run in any weather, in all seasons. With 3 wall insulation system in LEEP, and the 4 wall insulation system in Hybrid3, you get the very best in energy efficiency and protection from the cold.

If you are going away for an extended period, it’s a good idea to leave your hot tub running and heated while you are away. This will simply prevent potential freezing. In areas where you receive a lot of snowfall, having a sheet of plywood to cover the hot tub can help to distribute the weight on the cover.

    Cloudy Water

Q:            How do I get rid of cloudy water?

A:            Cloudy water happens in a hot tub if there has been heavy usage, or if the hot tub has been left for extended periods without shocking. If your hot tub water is cloudy, try rinsing the Microfilter and adding our product Pure Blue, then wait about an hour. Once you have done this, shock the water with the sanitizer you are using and leave the cover half open for about a half hour.

If cloudy water persists, you may need to drain your hot tub. If you are ensure or have any more questions about cloudy water, call one of Beachcomber’s Development Centers to talk to a Beachcomber Care person, or call your local Beachcomber Store for help.
