  • Choosing the Best Placement for Your Hot Tub

Choosing the Best Placement for Your Hot Tub

As the weather worsens, keep in mind that the oasis of the Beachcomber in your backyard is just a few steps away. Or so it should be. By keeping your hot tub close to your home and easily accessible, you’ll be able to quickly step in and enjoy its incredible hydrotherapeutic benefits, even throughout the rains of fall and deep freeze of winter.

    Placing Your Hot Tub

Beachcomber owners surveyed say that the optimal placement for your hot tub is within 10 feet from your back door. You’ll also want it conveniently located to a place inside for drying and changing and close to a water line and hose for filling.

Also ask yourself the following questions:

    • Who will get the most use out of the hot tub? If you have small children, safety will undoubtedly be one of your top concerns, so factor in any railings, shrubs, trees or overhanging gutters as obstacles, when planning placement for space efficiency.
    • Will you be inviting friends out to enjoy it? Is seclusion your main goal? Or would you prefer a more central location? If seclusion is your preference, think about building an enclosure or putting it in a gazebo-like structure, with curtains that can be closed or open.
    • Will you have to install any privacy features? A small space can lend itself well to a cozy hot tub installation, but you may have to think about shielding accessories such as patio umbrellas or strategic shrub placement.

And remember to plan your delivery route as well, for a smooth and efficient installation process. For more on installation best practices, download the Beachcomber Hot Tubs Pre-Delivery Guide.

When deciding on placement, keep in mind that a Beachcomber hot tub can sit on any foundation that is level and can support its weight. Cement patio tiles or interlocking bricks are just some of the relatively simple solutions for you to create a solid foundation for your hot tub. Just ensure you avoid installation in a low area where water may accumulate and damage the equipment, and that your hot tub is positioned so access to the equipment compartment will not be blocked.

    Beachcomber Tip:

Remember to keep your hot tub covered when not in use and placed far enough away from low hanging branches to save you time and energy in cleaning out tree needles, leaves, branches, or sap.

  • Hot Tubs: Why How It’s Made Really, Really Matters

Hot Tubs: Why How It’s Made Really, Really Matters

Most of the time, potential hot tub buyers find themselves stuck in a debate over the size, jet count, and seating available in different models as they try to narrow down the options. While making the right decisions here is vital to your enjoyment of your purchase, what’s visible and on the surface of the hot tub isn’t the only thing that needs serious attention.

What’s really going to impact the long-term enjoyment you get out of your hot tub is how it’s made, and quite often where.

What to Look for in Hot Tub Construction

Although most potential buyers believe a new hot tub costs between $3,000 – $5,000, the reality today is that a quality model costs between $7,000 – $20,000. While you save in the short-term on a cheaper model, you’ll end up paying far more in electrical bills, replacement parts, water treatments, and maintenance calls. Not to mention, you’ll be looking at a short-term, no frills experience with a much shorter product lifespan.

As you will soon discover, the quality in the construction will not only make a big impact in the enjoyment you get inside of your hot tub, but will also make a world of difference in the reliability, performance, and the return on your long-term investment. Simply put, the cheaper the hot tub is to buy, often the cheaper the components that were used to build it. At Beachcomber Hot Tubs, we are proud to use the exact same materials and construction standards across all of our models, with difference in price reflected in the add-on options, finishes, jetting configurations, and size.

So what to look for? Make note of the materials used as you look around and ask questions in-store.

To the average person, a hot tub shell and outer cabinetry may come in different colours but they all look the same. But assuming that all cabinetry and shells are of the same quality can be a huge mistake. For instance, most high-quality hot tubs are made with acrylic. Acrylic is a hard, durable plastic that is resistant to chemical and UV damage. When you look at hot tubs at a lower price point from unreliable manufacturers, you are likely seeing molding that is made from rotary plastics. This is the same kind of material you will find in a kayak or a portable table.

To choose the best shell, make sure it is durable and comes with an extended or lifetime warranty.

Cabinetry is another important consideration, although earlier generations of hot tubs were made of durable redwood or cedar, most of today’s cabinetry is synthetic. The best hot tubs are made by manufacturers who have specially engineered their hot tubs for superior durability and protection from extreme hear, cold, and UV rays. When choosing a hot tub, look for a model that has built in structural cradle that can support the tub with or without the cabinet – this will ensure the weight stays balanced The Enviroskirt by Beachcomber Hot Tubs, for instance, is designed to capture the look and performance of real wood, without the weathering and maintenance requirements.

These are a few of the reasons why it is so important to pay particular attention and educate yourself on the materials that are used. Ensure you find a durable, acrylic shell that is stain and scratch resistant, long-lasting cabinetry, and look for an intuitive control system that is accessible and easy-to-use at nighttime.

Then Be Sure to Pay Attention to Where it’s Made

Some hot tubs are made in countries known for cheap labour and few environmental regulations in order to decrease the production costs. Hot tubs produced in countries with lower labour costs and regulations tend to have more quality (not to mention ethical) control issues, and will most likely result in a smaller up-front cost but higher maintenance and shorter product lifetime.

Every Beachcomber Hot Tub is 100% manufactured in our Surrey, BC factory, with the same materials, and construction standards applied across every model price point. Each stage of the production is checked by hand for absolute quality to ensure we uphold our zero-defects approach to manufacturing.

  • Why Now Is The Right Time To Buy A Hot Tub

Why Now Is The Right Time To Buy A Hot Tub

People often wonder when is the best time to buy a hot tub or spa, and the answer isn’t always easy to uncover. The best time for you to buy a hot tub, may not necessarily be the best time for someone else.

It starts with looking at your priorities: what are you flexible on? The delivery date, colours, size, or lowest possible price? Every backyard and budget can present different needs and desires in their hot tub purchase, but here’s a few reasons why right now could be the perfect time for you to take the plunge.

Why Buy A Hot Tub Now:

    Colder Weather Is Coming

As the summer heat start to cool, now is the perfect time to invest into a hot tub for your backyard space. Buying now will ensure you have your hot tub installed before the snow hits and it becomes more difficult, and possibly costly, to install.

    Keep The Family Connected

Everyone knows once the kids are back to school and summer vacation ends, time spent together as a family becomes more and more precious. Investing into a hot tub and making it a centre point for the family to enjoy each evening will give you the opportunity to stay connected all year-round.

    Staying Healthy

A hot tub is the perfect place to start or end each day, especially as your schedule fills up in the fall months. It’s great for your physical health as a relaxing space to soothe joints and muscles, as well as for your mental health, helping you de-stress and sleep soundly.

    Model Clearances

As the calendar year unwinds, you’ll start to find great deals on models that are nearing the end of production, and end of year models that will need to be cleared from the factory before the new models hit the floor.

  • How Much Space Do You Need for Your Hot Tub?

How Much Space Do You Need for Your Hot Tub?

In choosing your hot tub and planning for your installation, the question of how much space you will need is a big one (pun unintended!)

    Planning for Your Hot Tub

    1. Will my hot tub be located indoors or outside?
    2. How much space do I have available on my deck or patio?  Measure carefully and then re-measure to be sure.
    3. What are the measurements of door openings, fence gates or deck stairs for getting my hot tub to its destination?  Check the dimensions of your [planned or purchased] hot tub’s length, width, and depth.
    4. Will it pass through interior doors or exterior gates?  Check the weight of your hot tub both empty and filled with water. Will your deck, patio, or room floor support its considerable weight?

If you’re comparatively shopping, you’ll notice that most hot tubs are square or rectangular (the 320 is the only Beachcomber we offer in a circular shape) and have a footprint between 6 and 8 feet. Keep in mind, you will need additional space of 1 to 2 feet around at least two sides of the hot tub to allow for maintenance.

We also have a variety of capacity options, accommodating anywhere from 2 to 8 people, with the average size designed for 5 to 6 adults. So consider the number of people that will be making regular use of your tub. If you are planning on using it for yourself and your spouse, a smaller 2-4 person capacity will be perfect. If you have a family of five and are looking for something you can enjoy socially with your kids, look for a hot tub that fits more. And if you have small children, finding a model with a cooling bench is important as it allows smaller bodies to safely perch higher above the water.

  • How Many Seats Should You Choose in Your Hot Tub?

How Many Seats Should You Choose in Your Hot Tub?

With the variety of hot tub models and jet configurations available, choosing the best one for your needs can seem overwhelming. Once you’ve decided to make the excellent lifetime investment of hot tub ownership, you need to outline your main needs for it. As you browse available models, ask yourself whether the main purpose of your soaking will be for stress relief and relaxation? For hydrotherapy? Or for social gatherings and entertainment?

Pinpointing the primary purposes of your purchase will help you answer the next question: how many seats do I need?

Keep in mind that the number of seats will also affect the size of the hot tub, so you’ll need to keep in mind how much space you’re working with before you begin comparing options. And try to rank the importance of various features, to be realistic with your expectations and to stay in line with your budget.

Here are a few things to think about when it comes to hot tub seating:

    Who will be using it?

Think not only about the number of people who will be regularly using your hot tub, but also evaluate the layout and imagine how it will work for your planned gatherings. How large is the foot well? How close together are the seats? Is one of the seats a lounger that might be great for hydrotherapy but likely awkward for larger groups?

Maybe using your hot tub for social gatherings will not be your focus. If you don’t entertain often or have a large family, you can save some space. If you’re picturing your hot tub as a place for reconnecting with your spouse, then a 4-person tub might be all you need.

What will it be primarily for?

The different purposes aren’t mutually exclusive of course, but if you’re seeking relaxation and hydrotherapy over socializing, then it might be good to maximize your investment with a tub that is more tailored to these benefits — even if this means a slightly smaller footprint. Look at your budget and consider what is the most important to you as you comparatively shop.

    Where will it be placed?

Consider how much space you have, and how you plan to design around the hot tub that you bring home. If you are looking to place it under a gazebo and want to have a hot tub that is socially-focused, make sure you leave space for people to get in and out comfortably in larger groups and for food and beverages along the sides.

When choosing the Beachcomber model that’s right for you, take these factors into account and decide on the seat number and configuration that best suits your needs.

  • DO I HAVE ENOUGH SPACE FOR A HOT TUB?

DO I HAVE ENOUGH SPACE FOR A HOT TUB?

With space becoming tighter in many urban homes, one of the first concerns many prospective buyers face is whether they really have the space for a hot tub. As you comparatively shop, you’ll start to find that most outdoor hot tubs are square or rectangular (the 320 is the only model we offer in a circular shape) and have a footprint between 6 and 8 feet.

    Hot Tub Space Requirements:

Before you enter into a showroom or start looking at models online, measure out the space where you intend to place your hot tub. Keep in mind, you will need an added space of 1 to 2 feet around at least two-sides of the hot tub to allow for maintenance. You will also need to ensure you have enough space for people to enter and exit the hot tub and space for your hot tub cover when not in use.

    Placement:

Then it comes down to placement. Do you have a spot at the far end of your backyard with an idyllic view you think would be the perfect spot for your hot tub? Think again. How often you will really use it is directly related to how close your hot tub is to your home. On a dark morning, or when it’s freezing outside, are you really going to trek across the yard to get in the hot tub every day? Keep in mind your hot tub will also require an electrical hook-up as you think of spots to place it.

    Beachcomber Tip:

Position your spa in close proximity to a door. If you are worried about noise, then be sure to choose a model with a dedicated circulation pump that quietly circulates the water 24 hours a day, eliminating the need for loud filtration cycles, such as the Beachcomber Hot Tubs Hush Pump.

    Structural Support:

No matter where you are planning on putting your hot tub, it will need the proper structural support. An empty hot tub is already a heavy object. Add in 400 gallons or so of water, your hot tub can weigh over 5,000 pounds. No matter where you choose to install your hot tub, a solid foundation such as a concrete pad will be necessary.

Sinking A Hot Tub Into A Deck:

If you plan on sinking or installing on a deck, joist and beams need to be sized to support the heavy load. We highly recommend consulting a structural engineer in the design plan if the deck is elevated to ensure it meets any necessary municipal codes and building standards.

Remember to follow the checklist above and feel free to contact a member of the Beachcomber Hot Tubs team should you have any questions about where the place your hot tub.
