What Makes A Hot Tub Energy Efficient?

At Beachcomber Hot Tubs, we always look at our products as both lifestyle and lifetime investments. Lifestyle, as they offer incredible benefits for your body and mind, while bringing you closer to the people you love, and lifetime as they are built to last generations of use.

A constant point of concern for prospective buyers and new owners is the cost of operation, particularly when the winter weather creeps in with its permanent chill. At Beachcomber, we are proud to say that our hot tubs are among the most energy efficient in the world! Energy optimization, and its resulting savings to you as an owner, is built into the construction of every hot tub we produce. Below are a few of the ways choosing Beachcomber as your hot tub manufacturer of choice  is the best way to keep you out of the red in your energy bill, and keep you totally satisfied, warm, and relaxed, all year-long.

Important Factors in Hot Tub Energy Efficiency

You can’t talk about energy efficiency in a hot tub and not start with insulation. Fully insulating the interior cavity of the hot tub continues to be the most important element in minimizing heat loss and maximizing efficiency – and it’s something that Beachcomber Hot Tubs continues to lead the industry in.

With our Hybrid4™ technology, Beachcomber took things to the next level by taking the interior equipment and moving it outside the hot tub cavity and under the step. This has allowed us to insulate all four walls of the hot tub, blocking moisture and heat from escaping the shell on all sides. The insulation we use is a specially formulated foam product that is made right in our British Columbia factory and expands to fill the entire space within the hot tub. It’s something you’ll see across Beachcomber models, and across price points. Along with saving you money on energy costs, the insulation allows the interior equipment to run at a consistent temperature, which ensures long equipment life, and maintains your desired water temperature.

Another big differentiator to look for when shopping for a hot tub is the cover. An old or ill-fitting hot tub cover will allow heat to readily escape from the surface of your hot tub when it’s not in use. This will cause your hot tub to work in overdrive in maintaining the set temperature. At Beachcomber, we manufacture our HEATSHIELD™ hot tub covers with up to 45% more insulating power than standard covers thanks to our air-tight heat-sealed design,  and reinforced construction.

Then, you need to look at the motors and pumps. Available on all Hybrid4™ models, our HUSH PUMP™ system heats and cleans water 24/7, with a fraction of the energy output and almost zero noise. Our engineering team has also developed an effective radiant ambient heating system within the construction of our hot tubs, successfully recycling the heat from inside the hot tub to maintain set temperature levels.

Finally, the foundation also plays an important role in the efficiency of your hot tub purchase. Look for a model that has a sturdy foundation, like the PERMA-SEAL™ in all Beachcomber models, that stops the internal insulated foam cavity from absorbing moisture and heat.

More than 40 years after we began constructing our hot tubs to exceed the industry in energy efficiency, Beachcomber continues to carry on our tradition of technological excellence. Learn more on the construction of our models by clicking the link below or contacting your local dealership.

  • How Hot Tubs Help Chronic Pain

How Hot Tubs Help Chronic Pain

A hot tub is more than just hot water. It’s scientifically proven to improve your physical well-being. There are three factors at work: heat, massage, and buoyancy. Together, they create an unparalleled therapeutic experience for your whole body, that has proven extremely beneficial for chronic pain sufferers.

    Hydrotherapy Benefits for Chronic Pain

    Heat

Warm hot tub water raises your body’s temperature, causing blood vessels to dilate and increasing your circulation. What does that mean for pain sufferers? You might not realize it, but heat therapy helps your boy’s cells eliminate damaging wastes, decreases inflammation, and promotes the release of endorphins.

    Buoyancy

You might feel a little bit lighter as you soak in a hot tub, but did you know that the water actually reduces your body’s weight by 85% – 90% relieving pressure on your joints, ligaments, and muscles. By reducing stress on your body, buoyancy reduces stiffness and promotes easier, pain-free movement and an improved range of motion. This effect is particularly useful in treating arthritis and fibromyalgia.

    Massage

Hot tub jets deliver streams of water to various parts of your body. Together, they target and relax tight muscles. The effects of consistent use include stronger flexibility, increased circulation, enhanced digestive processes, and a strengthening of your immune system.

Remember, consistency is key!  Try for a 20 minute soak every night to maintain the health benefits of your hot tub. Increase the duration of your standard soaking time after activities that exert the muscles, such as a strenuous workout or long periods of driving. And if you’re short on time, shorten the duration of your soak (maybe to 10-15 minutes), but make it a priority to soak regularly.

  • Sinking A Hot Tub Into A Deck Or Patio

Sinking A Hot Tub Into A Deck Or Patio

With that cool fall breeze officially in the air, you might be thinking a whole lot more about how nice it would be to enjoy an early morning or evening hot tub soak. A popular design solution a lot of new buyers inquire about with our team is sinking their Beachcomber Hot Tub into an existing deck or patio.

By sinking your hot tub on a patio, you are able to enjoy an elevated view in your tub, while you won’t have your view outside of the tub blocked by the new addition.

This sort of installation requires some simple yet very important preparation.

Tips for installing a hot tub into a deck or patio

    Structure

The safest and most cost-effective way to do this kind of installation is to have the tub sit on a concrete pad on the ground. This requires the deck to be no higher than 4 feet off of the ground.

If you want the tub on a deck more than a few feet above ground, things get a little more complicated. To start, you’ll have to hire a structural engineer to make sure the deck can support the weight of a filled hot tub. You’ll then have to consider how much of the tub you want exposed above the deck. This depends on preference, however you’ll need to have at least enough room exposed for the tub’s lip.

    Power

When planning any hot tub installation, the first thing to consider is how it’s going to be powered. Hot tubs require a nearby source of electricity, and because water is involved, any electrical hookup for a tub must include a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI).

    Safety

Although getting in and out of a hot tub can get more difficult as we get older, sinking the tub into your deck relieves a lot of the hassle. To create the safest possible installation, have the tub exposed about 12”-20” above the decking. This allows the tub to be very visible and prevents the potential danger of tripping. Also, be sure to always use a hot tub cover when young children are playing around the tub.

    Distance

Sunken or not, for maximum enjoyment we also always recommend keeping your Beachcomber Hot Tub as close to your back door as you can. Ensure that you place it just steps away, so that you can enjoy it in any weather. Based on feedback from owners, within 10 feet is the distance you should aim for. This way, even in a deep-free, you’ll be able to step outside and right into the warm massaging waters.

    Get tips from the experts:

We recommend consulting with a structural engineer prior to sinking or placing a hot tub on a hanging deck, to ensure you have the support required for the weight of it when it’s at capacity and fully-filled.

  • Hot Tubbing Dos & Don’ts

    Hot Tubbing Dos & Don’ts

With the chillier fall weather back in the air, kids back in school, and long vacation days of summer behind you, it’s a time many of our owners tell us when they get the most frequent use from their Beachcomber Hot Tub.

More time spent enjoying the hot tub shouldn’t mean more time spent maintaining the water and mechanics. That’s why it’s important to follow a few simple rules when it comes to hot tubbing, that will keep your water sparkling, even under frequent use.

    Hot Tub Etiquette Checklist:

    Do: Shower Before

You always see signs posted at public pools and hot tubs asking you to shower before entering, and might be wondering, is that really necessary? The short answer is yes. Even a one minute shower can heavily reduce oil, dead skin, and dirt that you might not realize you’ve picked up throughout the day. By reducing the amount of contaminants on your person, you reduce the risk of them entering your hot tub water and adding maintenance to keep it balanced. Another little known fact is that showering before can also reduce that chlorine smell that many people associate with pools and spas. Chlorine only produces that familiar smell when oxidizing contaminants.

    Don’t: Bring Food

While a snack in a hot tub might sound fun, we discourage this for a number of reasons. First, your health. Remember when your mom told you not to go swimming until 30 minutes after eating? Entering the water speeds up your blood flow, and can cause discomfort if you are in the middle of digesting a heavy meal. The second and more obvious reason to avoid eating in a hot tub is the crumbs that inevitably end up in the water, quickly dirtying the hot tub.

Do: Keep A Clean Swimsuit Handy

Just like showering before a hot tub removes the contaminants on your body, keeping a clean swimsuit will keep you covered, without covering your hot tub with added dirt and debris. Give your swimsuit a rinse after use, or if you have an outdoor shower, take a quick dip under in your trunks before slipping into your Beachcomber Hot Tub.

    Don’t: Use Glassware

While glassware is an absolute no-go around a hot tub, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t’ keep water handy. It’s extremely important to stay hydrated before, during, and after a hot tub soak, as the process of hydrotherapy naturally heats up your body and leaves it more dehydrated. That’s why the second you bring home a hot tub, the first follow-up purchase you should make is plastic water glasses and bottles that are safe to use around your Beachcomber. While grabbing the nearest kitchen glass might seem harmless, a hot tub a slippery environment, and losing your grip on glassware can be extremely dangerous and costly in a hot tub.

  • 3 Ways To Naturally Improve Sleep

3 Ways To Naturally Improve Sleep

We always want to seize the day, but are you doing enough to really seize the night? If you aren’t, you shouldn’t feel alone. According to the National Sleep Foundation, approximately 132 million Americans suffer from sleep disorders like insomnia more than one night a week. So what are a few of the steps you can take to ensure a good night’s rest? With over 90 known sleep disorders today, we need all the help we can get!

Natural Solutions For A Better Sleep

    Daily Exercise

Physical activity has been shown to be very beneficial to your sleep. Exercise increases the quality and duration of sleep by boosting the production of serotonin in the brain and decreasing levels of cortisol, better known as the stress hormone. However, it is important to maintain a moderate-intensity exercise and not overdo it.

    Get On A Schedule

Most people find that one of the best ways to build out a smooth sleep cycle is by following a schedule. The more consistent you are with your bed and wake-up times, the easier it will be for your body to follow. Your body has it’s own regulatory cycle, so use the most of it.

    Using A Beachcomber Hot Tub

At night, our body temperatures naturally drop, which signals the production of melatonin, better known as the sleeping hormone. Soaking in a hot tub raises your body temperature, and exiting will more rapidly cool it down, triggering a faster production of melatonin, better preparing your body for sleep. This sensation improves your circulation and helps your body release endorphins that allow you to relax and fall asleep not only faster but also sleep through the night soundly.

So, next time you want to watch late-night television, think about the benefits of clearing your body and mind in a Beachcomber Hot Tub before bed instead. Don’t just look at a Beachcomber Hot Tub as an investment into a good time, look at it as an investment into good health, and use it every single day as part of your routine to achieve the best results.

  • Relief from Arthritis in the Hot Tub

Relief from Arthritis in the Hot Tub

It’s no secret that soaking in warm water provides relief of joint pain and muscle soreness. Research has proven that warm water therapy works wonders for all kinds of musculoskeletal conditions, including arthritis, fibromyalgia and low back pain.

Bruce E. Becker, MD, director of the National Aquatics & Sports Medicine Institute at Washington State University in Spokane, points to many reasons why soaking in warm water is effective for arthritis sufferers. It reduces the force of gravity compressing the joint, offers full support for sore limbs, and can decrease swelling and inflammation and increase circulation.

Patients who Dr. Becker has studied seem to reach a maximum benefit after about 20 minutes of soaking.

Keeping this in mind, consider these other simple steps to make the most of your next hot tub soak.

Go warm, not hot. Water temperatures between 92 and 100 degrees are a healthy range. If you have cardiovascular problems, beware of water that’s too hot as it can additionally stress the heart.

Keep moving. Since warm water stimulates blood flow to stiff muscles and frozen joints, the hot tub can be an ideal place to do some gentle stretching. To ease low back pain, trap a tennis ball between the small of your back and the bottom or back of the tub, then lean into it and roll it against knotted muscles. The resulting improvement in flexibility can last even after you get out, especially if you stretch upon exiting the tub.

Hydrate! Make sure you drink water both before and after your soak to prevent dehydration. It may be easy to neglect the care you need to take of your insides if you’re distracted by the relief in your joints caused by the surrounding water. Consider setting a reminder alarm on your phone so you don’t forget your post-soak glass of water!

Get salty. Magnesium is a mineral that’s important for bone and heart health. While it’s not advisable to add non-Beachcomber water care solutions to your hot tub water, occasionally supplementing hot tub soaks with regular baths infused with magnesium sulfate crystals, or Epsom salts, can have a beneficial impact on arthritic symptoms as well.
